Music from Zack and Miri Make a Porno

The usher at the Arclight said he was not allowed to say the full name of the Zack and Miri movie when he introduced it. Management told him he had to replace the word “porno” with “adult movie.” Let’s hope Google doesn’t similarly punish me by classifying Reelsoundtrack as such.

It would be a shame, because this movie was damn funny and the music was really good. Here’s the list of songs from Zack and Miri in the order the appeared in the movie. The videos and downloads for the songs are at Reelsoundtrack.com. (links to downloads for the songs are in bold below):

Opening song – Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver by Primus

Coffee shop background – Smile, I Think She Likes You by James L. Venable

First song at reunion – Let Me Clear My Throat (Klassic Cool Original Version) by DJ Kool

Reunion, with Bobby Long – Sex And Candy by Marcy Playground

Reunion, talk to Roseanne – Steal My Sunshine by Len

Reunion, with Justin Long – Smalltown Boy by Bronski Beat

Reunion, last song – Just Like Honey by Jesus & Mary Chain

Bar/dream – New Frontier by Donald Fagen

Star “wars” movie shoot – Fett’s Vette by MC Chris

Zack and Miri movie scene – Hold Me Up by Live

After Zack and Miri scene – Dreaming by Blondie

Party at their house – Party Up (Up In Here) by DMX

Second party song – Hey by Pixies

You And I Are A Gang Of Losers by Dears

Make-up – I Love You by Climax Blues Band

Closing credits – We Don’t Have To Take Our Clothes Off by Jermaine Stewart

Here’s the video for my favorite song from the movie: Fett’s Vette by MC Chris:

Update/aside: Justin Long is hysterical in the movie as Bobby’s boyfriend. If you think he’s funny in the movie itself, you must wait for the mini-movie in the middle of the credits. He just keeps going and going and going there. Hilarious. Total commitment. Gotta love it.

Update 2: Thanks to Nik (see comment) for finding the video to Lift Me Up/Hold Me Up by Live. (Update 3) Jsax1, who posted the song on YouTube, has commented here to say that he posted an updated video/version of Hold Me Up on YouTube as well. Here is the updated video:

Update 4: Thanks to Tara for reaching out to the manager of Live to encourage them to re-release or re-post Hold Me Up. She posted her email exchange with the manager in the comments. Here is an excerpt:

Hi, After seeing zach and miri and looking for the song I found this website. I am on myspace and am “friends” with live so I left them a message that there is a movement to get the song re-released. The response from Live’s myspace manager is below….

Thank you for bringing this excitement and desire for this song to our attention. We’ve also noticed this on various sites and have already mentioned to management about this. At this point there are still no plans to release it or post it on myspace (we did suggest that as an option too). But we will definitely let everyone know if we hear any news!

Here’s to Live hearing the call from lifelong fans (me included). I first saw them at the Astrodome Arena in 1993. The Beauty of Grey is one of my favorite songs ever. Thank you Tara for starting the push.

  1. I can’t find Hold Me Up anywhere online! Loved the song and would like to have have it, but can’t seem to find it. Any ideas?

  2. Are you sure you have the song correct for Zack and Miri’s scene? Because I’ve tried searching for it and nothing comes up for LIVE Hold me up….

  3. Hold Me Up by Live is the correct song. I confirmed it in the credits of the movie. I cannot find it online anywhere either. It is one of the few songs from the movie that aren’t available.

I will keep on looking for it though and will post a link if I can find it.

  4. any luck on finding that song? i looked pretty hard and couldn’t find it, i believe its a B-sing from throwing copper

  5. The song is “Hold Me Up” by Live. In some circles, it’s aka “Lift Me Up.” I’ve searched feverishly for it on the internet and it DOES NOT EXIST. The only version out that I could find is a very rough cut on youtube. Spread the word so we can get the song out!

  6. It’s referred to as Lift Me Up alot even though Hold Me Up is the actual name.

sound quality is not so hot.

  7. I finally found this after searching for a long long time. Go to mediafire.com/live and then click on Throwing Copper (Demo Tape) it’s under 04. hold me up.mp3, click on the icon and download it!

    • Thanks for posting this link! I was totally pysched to get this awesome song after searching for a little while to find it!

  8. After some thorough research and a frantic search for the song, I’ve discovered that the song was one never released on any album by Live. So, therefore, the song will be nearly impossible to find.

  9. Verschnizzle found my massive LIVE collection! Haha, “Hold Me Up” had about 150 downloads between the time I went to bed and the time I got up today after you posted that link.

I’ve uploaded a new video to YouTube promoting the fact that it was used in the movie. The download link is included in the more info section.

LIVE holds on to its outtakes with an iron grip, so I don’t know if they will ever release it. (It took Kevin Smith three tries in over a decade for them to finally allow him to use it in a movie.) But maybe, just maybe, if LIVE sees the support the song gets on YouTube and via download through my collection, they’ll finally release the song one day.

    Help spread the link!

  10. I really liked this movie, but it was the soundtrack that made my evening. They did a great job matching the music to what was happening, and to…flesh out certain scenes!

  11. I agree with Nicole. This movie has one of my favorite soundtracks; I had forgotten how much I like “Steal My Sunshine” and “Dreaming”.

    Hi,

My name is Tara and I have been a lifelong Live fan who has seen Live many times during my 30 years – most recently at the Hammond Festival of Lakes in Northwest Indiana. The reason I am writing is to inform whoever helps Live manage this site on myspace that there is a web movement developing in support of Live re-releasing this song! The use of the song in Zach and Miri is drawing new attention to this song and people are trying to find places to purchase Hold Me Up/Lift Me Up online.

Here is an example of a website where people are talking about trying to find the song. (look at comments at the bottom) If Live will not re-release it or provide it for downloads – please put it on Live’s player on their myspace page. It is an amazing song!
