Epic Movie: Skip the movie, skim the soundtrack
Epic Movie was on Starz 12 or some such channel this weekend – and yes, I watched it. It is one of the few major releases that I did not go out and see last year. It started off funny enough, but wore me out about half way through. To be honest, I could not make it through the Pirates of the Caribbean rap. (If you have not seen the movie, no need to ask). Thankfully, I had paused it for a bit while I was making dinner, so I could skip through the more painful chunks of it.
As for music, there is a similar pile-on kind of approach. While some of it is good, much of it serves as a set-up for yet another bad booty joke, including, not surprisingly, songs such as Bring 4th Ya Boot, Ms. New Booty and the interminable Bounce Dat Azz. Not even the Eagles of Death Metal, Foreigner, or the clichéd Eye of the Tiger training montage could save the day.
The soundtrack scores a ReelRating of 34/100. That means just over one-third (34%) of the songs from the movie were on the soundtrack, taking into account a penalty for adding to songs from X5 to the soundtrack that weren’t in the movie. My advice: skip the movie, skim the soundtrack. You can check out the videos and downloads for all 30 songs in Epic Movie at ReelSoundtrack.
Here’s one of the good songs from the movie – Promiscuous by Nelly Furtado, featuring Timbaland:
