Perfect Song Perfect Scene – Will Ferrell Sings Whole Wide World in Stranger Than Fiction

I really loved this movie – Stranger Than Fiction. Will Ferrell was his usual quirky, funny self, but in a more subdued serious way. And the pairing with Maggie Gyllenhall was brilliant. Their chemistry was palpable; their tension made the movie. Not just because they were classic foils – the hyper-organized but neurotic IRS agent and the anarchic and carefree artisan baker – but because of the dynamics of the actors and characters themselves.

(spoiler alert)My favorite scene in the movie is when Ferrell busts out her Gyllenhall’s beaten guitar and sings the only song he knows – Whole Wide World, originally performed by Wreckless Eric.

Here’s the perfect song, perfect scene from the movie Stranger Than Fiction:

And here’s the original from Wreckless Eric. Which do you prefer?

There are 17 songs in the movie and another four songs not from by inspired by the movie on the soundtrack album. You can find the videos and downloads for them at Reelsoundtrack.com.

  1. Thanks for posting both the original and Will’s version. That is definitely the best scene of a great flick. As far as which to prefer? Well, one can never deny the strength of the original, but the movie’s ripped down version is a killer.

  2. I’ve seen a lot of movies in my days, but “Stranger Than Fiction” is one that I will always remember. Will Ferrell and Maggie Gyllenhaal have played themselves right into my heart… forever. And Will’s performance of “Whole Wide World” actually made want to learn to play the guitar. Thanks.
