The Lloyd Dobler Effect – “In Your Eyes” is the Perfect Song, Perfect Scene in Say Anything
It’s hard to think of a more iconic movie music scene than Lloyd Dobler holding a boombox over his head as In Your Eyes calls out to Ione Skye, telling her to forget about her dad and choose the awkward but affectionate wannabe kickboxer from Say Anything. Call it the Lloyd Dobler effect, but the swooning serenade has never been the same.
Who needs the karaoke stylings of butchered ballads when mixtapes, playlists and Pandora stations dedicated to lost loves can say what you want to say in a voice that captures the heartache and the hope of an aching love. We all owe a debt of gratitude to Lloyd Dobler and his persistent, insatiable longing for Diane Court. Peter Gabriel’s In Your Eyes has stayed in my personal playlist ever since.

And here are the rest of the songs from the Say Anything soundtrack – quite a good one actually – including Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone, Aerosmith, Living Color, Fishbone, Depeche Mode, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Cheap Trick.
