Michael Penn: Romeo Washes His Black Jeans at Sunshine Cleaning

You know you remember the song – No Myth. If you are over 30, you have to remember the song – a classic. That means you know Michael Penn too, even if you don’t know you know. Romeo in Black Jeans, Amy Mann, brother Sean. Yeah, that Penn. He’s been making great music for more than a decade (almost two?).

I had the good fortune of seeing Aimee Mann and Michael Penn live at the Birchmere a couple years ago. I went for Amy Mann, who I had crushed on since Til Tuesday (Voices Carry) and found a renewed love for with Magnolia. /The whole movie was spun from a line in one of her songs./ But I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Michael Penn, who sang his own songs and played her accompaniment.

In recent years, Penn has been scoring a lot of movies, including Boogie Nights, Hard Eight, American Teen, and The Last Kiss. He surfaces again for the soundtrack to Sunshine Cleaning. He delivers a engaging score yet again. There are also 15 songs in the movie, including Bodega, Paul Trudeau, Daniel May and Norman Greenbaum (Spirit in the Sky).

Here’s the complete list of songs from Sunshine Cleaning, plus downloads for many of them. You can find the videos and downloads for them at Reelsoundtrack.com. The soundtrack album for Sunshine Cleaning is available for download from Amazon. It has about a third of the songs from the movie.

Update: How is that No Myth is not on YouTube? Tons of covers, but not the original. Was it really released 20 years ago. Holy crap, I’m old. Seems like yesterday. A distant yesterday, but still yesterday. Not 20 years ago yesterday.

Update 2: Here is No Myth – available for download from Amazon – for those who have been asking where to find it.
