All 40 Songs from the Bandslam Soundtrack
Here are all 40 songs in from movie Bandslam. The Bandslam soundtrack album only has 15 songs on it, but the videos and downloads for all 40 songs are here.
I have to say, the music in the movie Bandslam was a ridiculous surprise – in a very good way. When it started off with Rebel Rebel by David Bowie, I sat forward in my seat and thought – wait a minute – this is not your average movie about high school kids forming a band. As the movie progressed, it just kept getting better.
Mick Jagger, The Velvet Underground, Nick Drake. Throw in some good ole ska like the Aggrolites, then some more Bowie and even Violent Femmes, Wilco and Peter Bjorn (the Sa5m video that he makes for class). I kept on thinking, how is this music in a movie made for teens. Am I underestimating the musical taste of a generation of kids or is the music producer more cracked than Whitney?
But I stopped worrying and kept on listening.
Sure there were the occasional songs thrown in for the masses. I could have done without any of the songs from Glory Dogs. But the tunes from the other Bandslam bands were brilliant. I would buy albums for The Burning Hotels and Zeale & Phranchyze immediately. I would even shell out for Amphetemine by I Can’t Go On, I’ll Go On.
I think I was only one of three people in the theater who recognized David Bowie at the end of the movie, but it didn’t matter. I listened past the overwrought songs in the closing credits and forced songs near the end. Instead, I focused on what is truly a brilliant set of tunes. If 1 in 20 moviegoers returns home, jumps on Wikipedia and learns about the glory of CBGB or discovers what ska is, then the movie has done its job. If in the process of listening to Vanessa Hudgens, they are exposed to Nick Drake or The Velvet Underground, then their musical lives will be changed forever. If they ask themselves, why did so many scenes start with “Dear David Bowie” and then they stumble across Ziggy Stardust, then Pandora will swell with a whole new set of stations.
In other words, I really liked this movie – particularly the first half of it. And I was ridiculously, and pleasantly, surprised by the soundtrack.
The album has about a third of the songs from the movie, but you can find the rest of them, with notes on the scenes they were in, and in the order they appeared in the movie, below. Let your musical adventure begin.

Hi, You may have already discovered this, I’m here googling for the music scores for my daughter. Ampthetmine was written by Steve Wynn (formerly of cult legends The Dream Syndicate, he performed this song with his most recent band incarnation – The Miracle 3). You can find the song on his Static Transmission CD. As a 43-y-o music nut, I was not looking forward to seeing this film when my daughter pestered me to take her along. How wrong was I (how misleading was the advertising!)? Great film – nothing like the High School Musical/ Vanessa Hudgens vehicle it was portrayed as. For my 10-y-o it was a great introduction (so much better than Dad trying to foist them on her!) to David Bowie, Wilco, Shack et al. I kept whispering ‘I’ve got this’ to her during the film 🙂 She’s now a big Bowie fan and she was delighted to discover I had the original Amphetamine on CD. I nearly jumped out of my seat when I realised what they were playing in the film. Now if only she could figure out the chords on her guitar…
Pity this song was missed off the original list: I’m guessing (i.e. reluctantly acknowledging) that Steve was one of the lesser known artists featured in the soundtrack.

hrm… let’s see on the ska front to start. the specials are essential. i would start with “a message to you rudy” or “ghost town.” i would put the toasters and operation ivy in that category as well. or you could go back further to the roots of ska and listen to toots and the maytals, who actually coined the phrase do the reggae. i have also been a fan of 90s ska like skankin’ pickle, let’s go bowling and reel big fish. i am far more influenced by west coast ska rather than east coasters like the pietasters, but others disagree.
i would throw the specials into a new pandora channel and see what pops out. If you don’t like it, switch it to skankin’ pickle. you will not be disappointed.

Hey,
I saw the movie at least three times on my plane and I kept wondering what this song was called, the one in this scene where Will goes to Sa5m’s house and wants to apologise again(and fails). It’s the one Sa5m’s mother shows to Will, and when she somes home she’s just red and angry…
Does anyone know this song? =s
@/_#X said this on January 5, 2010 at 11:43 am |
The song Sa5m sings solo (with the guitar) is called “Everything I Own.” The original song was written & recorded by a 70’s rock band called “Bread,” who had several Top 10 hits. Several versions have since been recorded by other artists. (Boy George had a pretty good version, I think.) That song is also the same song “I can’t go on, I’ll go on” performs at the end of the movie – just a different arrangement. Enjoy……

Nice work, buddy. Nailed Young folks by Pete Bjorn without breaking much of a sweat thanks to you. Now I know why Armond White (critic) called Bandslam the best film of the summer in ’09. He’s a blowhard, but he was right on.

Or support the artists (especially smaller independent ones like Steve Wynn) by actually *buying* their music. Has anyone posted a complete list of the tracks including those not on the soundtrack CD?

There was a song in the movie I don’t see on the list. The main character was actually listening to it on his iPod while walking in the hall and then he had to stoop down to tie his shoes over and over again for some reason. Charlotte comes up behind him and comments on how he was tying his shoes……does anyone know this song?

screw the sats and the star cat and exit exams! this movie should be a requirement for all people attempting the ged or being passed through the halls on the way to a high school diploma!!! instead of bottling up the angst of adolescence and the emotions that stem from the crimes of their parents people should be encouraged to express themselves through music and use video (u-tube-face book) for their betterment! love love love this movie and commend you for the heavy responsibility you have taken on turning these blank canvases on to the greats!!! keep being you for them!!!

So the song Everything I Own was done ages ago by September 67, super hard to find, I have the single. Not sure if it is a cover or someone elses song, will have to dig out the cd. But I totally agree that this tween movie has one of the best soundtracks in ages!
Heather said this on March 29, 2011 at 7:37 pm |
Everything I Own, was done by Bread, as some one said earlier, but a super cool version was done by a band called September 67. Ans this tween movie is super cool, my 6 year old and I love to watch it, but she has good taste in music for the most part.

Well it only took me 2 years to catch up with this movie via Sky TV but WOW – watched it with friends including their teen kids who were blown away with the ‘oldies’ music. After the film we fired up my iPod and started to listen to my collections of ska, punk and rock from the 70’s and 80’s. Any film that introduces the viewer to music styles they may never have experienced is great but this was was spectacular.
Thanks for the full track listing too – only 2 i didn’t already have on my iPod but just bought them via your links.

Does anyone know the name of the song that’s playing (faintly) in the background while Will is walking on the sidewalk and Charlotte pulls up next to him in her red Cady? It starts out with lots of acoustic guitar strumming along and finally into lyrics (barely audible).
I love that tune!
Marc Castaneda said this on July 2, 2011 at 1:07 pm |
The song with Will outside Charlotte’s caddy is Road by Nick Drake, and it’s on the list.
This really is a great movie; watching it for the umpteenth time now. The music is a big part of that. The Shack song is my absolute favorite.
